Athletics Highlights: Upper School Sports, Honors

IMG_8167IMG_7764Boys varsity basketball finished the season with a 23-7 record, capturing the NJIC Liberty Division crown for the second straight season and the fourth league title in the past six seasons. The team really came together during the season and peaked heading into the state playoffs, where the Bulldogs advanced to the State Sectional Final for the first time in School history. The team was led by Captains Aaron Gates ’16 and Seon Layne ’16, who both received 1st team all-league honors. Also noteworthy were freshmen Tyson Etienne ’19 and Jordan McKoy ’19, who both received 2nd team all-league honors. IMG_7722Rounding out the starting lineup was sophomore center Xavier Wilson ’18, who received honorable mention all-league honors. Reflecting on this significantly strong season, Head Coach and D-E Athletic Director Eli Goldberger said, “This was as deep and as balanced a team as I have had.”

IMG_7633From Head Coach Marissa Moore: “The 2015-16 girls varsity basketball season ended with an overall record of 9-14. Having a very young team with only one senior and one junior, we knew this would be a rebuilding year. The girls worked extremely hard all season, and despite getting off to a slow start they finished strong, winning six out of the last eight games. IMG_7598Junior Regan Contrucci ’17 led the team in points and assists; sophomore Madeleine Kachikian ’18 led the team in rebounds and steals; and senior Heather-Rae Goldfarb ’16 made the most 3-pointers.Sophomore Elena Latinsky-Ortiz ’18 returned halfway through the season from an ankle injury and quickly became a huge factor in close games. Freshmen Mya Most ’19 and Ryan Rodgers ’19 took on huge roles in their first year and gained a lot of valuable knowledge that they will carry with them for the next three years. The girls are excited for next season and are ready to pick up where they left off.”

IMG_8005From Coach Courtney Marro: IMG_8017“As our team continues to grow, track and field had another strong showing this past winter season. Over the course of about three months, the team successfully set 13 new school records, including the boys 200, 300, 400, shot put, 4×200 relay, high jump relay, and shot put relay, and the women’s 55 dash, 55 hurdles, long jump, pentathlon, shuttle hurdles relay, and shot put relay. In addition, the team sent three athletes to the Meet of Champions in February and had nearly every athlete earn a personal record pin at some point in the season.”
