Boys Tennis Team “Springs” Into History

Contributed by Coach Joseph Iwanski

The boys tennis team capped off a memorable season in which they went 24-3 and won the Bergen County Tournament decisively, with unprecedented success at the NJSIAA singles and doubles tournaments: the Bulldogs had three players make it all the way to the quarterfinals for the first time in D-E School history! On June 9, The Star-Ledger published their end-of-season boys tennis honors, and D-E had some players who have been recognized in a big way.

First of all, the team finished #9 in the final top-20 poll.

Doubles pair of Zachary Canelos ‘15 and Martin Schecter ‘16, the top doubles pair in Bergen County, advanced to the Round of 8 for the second year in a row, losing a tight three-set match to #3 seeded Millburn. They were named 3rd team All-State doubles, and were 1st team All-Non-Public doubles.

Freshman sensation Daniel Nuzhny ’18, a Bergen County Champion, also advanced to the Round of 8, where he lost a tight two-set match to the #3 seed as well. He was not only named 1st team All-Non-Public singles, but also named the North Jersey Athletic Conference’s Player-of-the Year.

This is pretty fantastic news for all three guys, and great for the team to finish in the top 10!

As mentioned by The Star-Ledger, “Nikhil Kokra ’17 and Jordan Runyon ’15 also collected titles for Dwight-Englewood at the Bergen County Tournament, coming out on top at second and third singles. Samuel Garden ’16 and Brandon Grill ’18 won it all at second doubles.”

Ultimately, the team was named The Record Boys Tennis Team of the Year.

First of all, the entire Boys Varsity Team finished #9 in the final Top 20 poll. Zach & Martin were named 3rd team All-State doubles, and were 1st team All-Non-Public doubles. Daniel was named 1st team All-Non-Public singles, and was also named the North Jersey Athletic Conference’s Player-of-the-Year! Pretty fantastic news for all 3 guys and great for the team to finish in the top 10. Our young team looks forward to continued success next year!
