Calliope 2016 Wins Silver Crown

The 2016 edition of D-E’s Upper School literary journal Calliope received recognition earlier this spring, when it was announced as a Silver Crown winner by Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA).  Last year’s Calliope editors Savannah DiGiovanni ’16, Noa Levin ’17, Nasrin Lin ’16, and Maxine Musto ’17 were able to reunite briefly together with faculty advisor Steve Petkus for the official Crown Awards announcement and award presentation during the annual CSPA convention in New York, NY. Calliope has won this national-level honor only four times previously (Gold in 1982; Silver in 1993, 2011, and 2014).

The CSPA judges praised the magazine as follows: “The staff of Calliope opted for an unadorned style that brings to mind the clarity and cohesiveness of an art gallery’s exhibition catalogue. The images are treated with respect for the artist or photographer’s intentions, and reproduced with obvious technical skill. Poetry is placed without fear of white space on pages, with each poet’s line breaks intact. In perhaps the staff’s boldest choice, titles are set in a boldface version of the same typeface as the text, resisting the urge to overwhelm the rest of the magazine’s restraint.”
