Introducing the D-E Garden Project!

Contributed by Sixth Grade Dean and D-E Garden Project member Tasha Urbanowski

The D-E Garden Project (aka “Green Garden Project” or GGP) is a D-E Parent’s Association volunteer group. It supports the creation, evolution and maintenance of the school’s teaching gardens to, in turn, support a range of green-minded programming in all three divisions of the school. The group, led by parents Sue Evans P’18 and Sayantani DasGupta P ‘20, ‘22 as well as myself, seeks to make these outdoor teaching spaces — including vegetable gardens, compost spaces, the pond area and other “garden-laboratories” we may envision in the future — both functional and lovely. As they provide important educational opportunities, the gardens also bring students in contact with nature and refresh the spirit of those who use them.

The GGP is a new venture; we held our first meeting in September 2014 and were excited to discover many gardeners/interested parents — 26 in all — with a wide range of expertise willing and eager to join in this timely project!

Our first work day — on November 13 — will serve the Lower School vegetable garden already in place. After years of producing beautiful flowers & vegetables and supporting students’ exploration of so many concepts in science, the soil is tired and needs help! At 2 p.m., students will lead a demonstration for GGP parents of the composting process by which we create the organic “fertilizer” that also improves soil structure. Then we will all work together to refresh and replenish the garden beds by working a large amount of compost into the soil — preparing it for another fruitful year of education and inspiration.

Meanwhile, a new, larger MS/US vegetable garden is in the works above the Senior Parking Lot, and parents from the GGP are working on the design phases with the school as it breaks ground. GGP parents will also be supporting the school recycling and composting initiatives.
