Kraut Run Celebrates Kraut’s Legacy

“Kraut would be pleased.” “Kraut would be happy.” “Kraut would be proud.”

These were among the sentiments expressed by many of the 400 attendees of the second annual “Kraut’s Running of the Bulldogs.” Held on Graham Field during a gorgeous, summer-like Saturday in late September, the Kraut Run this year featured both a new, competitive 5K and an approximately 1K Fun Run/Walk. The event attracted D-E alumni, students, current and former faculty and staff members, parents, and friends.

Designed originally to honor beloved English teacher Jerald “Kraut” Krauthamer in the weeks immediately prior to his passing in the fall of 2015, this year’s event further established itself as a D-E School tradition, with a cause directly in keeping with Kraut’s legacy. Prior to the crack of the starting pistol, participants heard from Kraut’s wife, longtime D-E faculty member and coach Betsey Carson, Upper School Principal Joseph Algrant, and D-E parent and event sponsor Debbie Satnik, who together with her family has stepped up to underwrite the event and also issued a Challenge Grant for those competing.

Advancement Director Pat Boig explains: “With the help of Debbie, Hal, Marti ’11, Corey ’13 and Tara ’16, the Kraut Run this year raised almost $20,000 in support of the program Mr. Krauthamer loved so much. Through the proceeds from last year’s inaugural and this year’s Kraut Run, we are happy to announce that we have established the Jerald Krauthamer Track and Cross Country Endowment Fund which honors Jerry’s legacy in perpetuity.”

Senior Zane Diaz ’17 earned a 1st place finish in the 5K, with a time of 19:03, and he was followed closely by teammates from the cross country and track & field teams. Guided by the stellar efforts of event leaders Patti Barrett, Fred Daly, and Maria Sanchez Gardner ’78, those who participated and or volunteered all exemplified Kraut’s love for running and “finishing strong.”

Kraut’s Running of the Bulldogs celebrates and commemorates Jerald Krauthamer, who taught English and coached track at D-E for 38 years. Kraut had a passion for language and literature; he was deeply committed to track and cross-country; but mainly he loved working with young people. This event and the Jerald Krauthamer Track and Cross Country Endowment Fund honor Kraut’s legacy of dedication to young athletes. We hope to promote running as a lifelong activity in the way Kraut did as both a coach and a runner himself. The proceeds from the run will support D-E student athletes as Kraut always did: providing financial aid for them to attend camps and other special opportunities as well as supporting other needs of the track and cross country teams. To support the fund, please visit www.d-e.org/giving and use the online form to specify your gift for this purpose. Questions may be directed to Pat Boig at 201-227-3108 or boigp@d-e.org.
