Second Annual Concerto Competition Results

On Jan. 7, the Annual Upper School Orchestra Concerto Competition was held. According to Annaliesa Place, Strings Director, “This is our second year of the competition that draws from a strong talent pool which is the US Symphony Orchestra.”

This year’s two winners will perform their solo piece with the orchestra at the Extravaganza concert on April 26:

Elliot Roman ‘17 – piano: Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Piano Concerto No. 2”

Lawrence Chiang ‘17 – Henryk Wieniawski’s “Violin Concerto No. 2”

Honorable Mentions are:

Angela Zhang ‘18 – flute

Danielle Roman ‘15 – soprano

“I spent several months preparing for the concerto competition,” says Elliot. “D-E is full of so many talented musicians, I knew the competition would be fierce. I was very nervous going into the actual audition, but I was able to just focus on the music. When the results were posted, I was surprised, but excited to see my name at the top of the page. I was also thrilled to see my fellow winners’ names there as well. I cannot wait to perform with the D-E orchestra in the spring.”

“I am very excited to win this year’s concerto competition and cannot wait to play with the orchestra!” says Lawrence. “I look forward to work with the D-E orchestra and am very honored to be able to play as a soloist.”

“Holding a competition is such a great opportunity and experience for the students who enter,” says Ms. Place. “We look forward to continuing this tradition as the orchestra continues to build and grow.”
