South Asian Affinity Group Celebrates Diwali

By Vandana Arora P ’21 and Jasmine Jaswal P ’18
Co-Chairs, South Asian Affinity Group

Diwali is the Festival of Lights, which celebrates the Indian New Year. Lamps and candles are lit in people’s homes to remind all that light triumphs over darkness, and good triumphs over evil.

The D-E South Asian Affinity Group – which, until this school year, was formerly known as the Indian Affinity Group – held its first Diwali event at the home of parent Vikram Akula P ’19 (pictured above at center with Head of School Dr. Rodney De Jarnett) on October 24, 2014. The event was a great success, and the delicious food, entertainment, and conversation were enjoyed by students, parents, Head of School Dr. Rodney De Jarnett, and administrators.

In the past, the group has held a breakfast at the beginning of the year and then a lunch in the spring. We hold meetings once every quarter, and our two main events for the year are the Diwali celebration (our first-ever) and the annual Holi event in the spring. As an affinity group, we also meet with Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs Clinton Carbon, other affinity group chairs, and Parents’ Association President Stephanie Landau P ’13, ’17. We are hoping to organize a couple of social events with the school.

If anyone would like to be included, they can email Mrs. Jaswal at jasminejaswal@yahoo.com to be added to the affinity group’s list.
