Stella Mayer ’15: High School Female Athlete of the Week – Jan. 20

After scoring her 1,000 point in the girls’ varsity basketball season opener on Dec. 19, Stella Mayer ‘15 was named The Record’s High School Female Athlete of the Week on Jan. 20. The story announcing her accolade focused on the Jan. 15 passing of her grandmother – after whom she was named. That night, rather than mourn, Stella and Cornell-bound twin sister Alexis ‘15 played along with the Lady Bulldogs versus Lyndhurst – something that they knew their “Yiayia” – Greek for “grandmother” – would have wanted, as she was often seen at their games. Indeed, D-E won 63-18, and Stella finished with what she believes is her first triple-double, with 14 points, 10 assists, 10 steals, five rebounds and a block.

Stella, who is off to Michigan this fall, had previously recorded a game-high 17 points during a 35-25 win against New Milford on Jan. 13, and also made 15 points in D-E’s 44-38 win versus Dwight Morrow on Jan. 17.
