D-E ’74

Bart Purchell Varsity Baseball | D-E ’74 | Vince Delalla

A note from former faculty member and coach , Vince Delalla,

“Lunch with Bart “Major League” Purcell in Stonington, Connecticut – October 1, 2018

Bart Purchell was the senior captain of the varsity baseball team I coached at Dwight Englewood School in 1974, my first year at the school.  We won the conference championship and Bart went on to play four years at Columbia.  I went on to coach wrestling!  I’m ten years his senior.

When I was leaving after lunch we stopped for a photo by the cars.  All of a sudden, I remembered my glove, which I always keep in my trunk.  I said, “Wait a minute, wait a minute.”   I opened my trunk and retrieved my glove.  Then Bart said, “Wait a minute, Coach.”  He went to his car parked next to mine.  Opening the trunk, he retrieved his glove.  Neither of us could believe we still kept our gloves in our cars.  Actually, Bart does me one better – he oils his glove every spring.

I don’t know where we were – in some kind of baseball time-warp I suppose – but it felt great!”
