D-E Fights Hunger through Snack Packs

On April 26, “D-E Fights Hunger with Spring Carnival” took place, offering a new community service initiative, in conjunction with the Center for Food Action. In the three weeks leading up to the annual Student Government-sponsored carnival, food items were collected for the Weekend Snack Pack Drive, which provides children at risk of hunger in the Englewood public schools with weekend snacks. The packs were assembled by students for two community service hours in the morning prior to the carnival.

According to Director of Student Activities Maya Gunaseharan ’08, “Over 20,000 Bergen County students participate in the free and reduced price meal program. While these students receive meals at school during the week, they often go hungry on the weekends.”

Through this drive, the D-E community was able to help by:
1) Donating a specific food item.
2) Donating money.
3) Donating time in putting together the pack.

In the end, around 1,100 Snack Packs were packaged by approximately 65 volunteers, made with contributions from D-E families and faculty, allowing us to exceed our goal of 1,000 packs.
