Ultimate Frisbee Varsity Debuts at D-E!

This spring the D-E Ultimate Team had its official first season as a Varsity sport, and in the cheery words of Coach Mike Bell, “We had our most successful season to date!”   Although the team has played as a club team for about five years, 2013 was the first year the Ultimate Bulldogs played a full league season as a member of the New Jersey division of USA Ultimate.  They attended the Division 2 State Tournament last year, but finished only a few spots from last place.

This year, in contrast, the team had an incredibly strong season, finishing 10-3 before the State Tournament. They held their first home tournament, the Hudson River Invitational, where we hosted Stuyvesant JV, Bard High School, and Delbarton, and were undefeated in this round-robin.  In Watchung Hills’ Invitational in May, they finished in 3rd place, and the team  was listed as the number 2 seed for the Division 2 State Tournament, at which they went undefeated up until the finals.  “Ultimately” the D-E Ultimate Bulldogs finished in second place in division two in New Jersey!

Coach Bell provided these season highlights:  “ Senior and co-captain Franco Lombardi ’14 was instrumental in carrying the team to its successful finish.  He was MVP this season and was virtually unstoppable on the field.  He was an assist and defense leader.  Junior and co-captain Jacob Snyder ’15 was the touchdown leader, scoring 48 times this season.  Junior and co-captain Josh Swerdlow ’15 was a crucial defensive player and performed a rare goal maneuver known as a “Callahan” — it requires intercepting the opposing teams’ disc when your team is on defense in the opponent’s end zone.  Not only has it never happened before in DE history, it is also incredibly rare in the sport of Ultimate.  Finally, Adrian Evans ‘17 exploded onto the scene this season and almost single-handedly turned around the pivotal semi-final match in the State Tourney!  He had nonstop defense, two assists, and two goals, after the team was down 4-7 at half-time, carrying us forward to win 10-8 and pushing us into the final match.”

Here’s to our newest Bulldogs, and to a distinctive debut!
