Goodbye & Thank You Mr. Davies!

Along with all the joyfulness associated with D-E 125 this year, there was admittedly a bit of the bittersweet too, particularly as the school year began to wind down and a series of events were held to honor Peter Davies, Lower School Principal. After more than 30 years of service to Dwight-Englewood, Peter and also his wife, Lower School Assistant Teacher Melissa Davies, decided to retire at the conclusion of this 2013-2014 academic year.

In remarks shared at the annual Trustee, Faculty & Staff Dinner in late May, Head of School Dr. Rodney De Jarnett detailed Peter’s career with the School as follows: “Since 1983, Peter has been an exceptional member of our D-E community. He willingly, skillfully took on myriad roles, maintaining sage leadership during times of significant and sometimes turbulent change in the life of the School. Peter’s tenure has had an incredible, indelible impact on literally all aspects of Dwight-Englewood.”

“Peter began at D-E as Middle School Assistant Principal during its transition period in the early 1980’s, as a junior high to a ‘true’ Middle School. From 1989 to 1993 he served as Director of Admissions, and he began oversight as well of the Summer Program. Peter was named Lower School Principal for the first year of D-E’s merger with the Bede School, in 1993, and then he became Assistant Head and Director of Technology, heading up the School’s Academic Technology department and the then-new, integrated “MST” (Math/Science/Technology) program. After a brief stint as Head of School (filling in while Dr. Ralph Sloan was on sabbatical leave), fundraising for the then-new Klein Campus Center became the core focus of Peter’s work, when he served as Development Director from 2001-2006. Then Peter took the helm as Principal of our Lower School. And Peter’s entire family has been part of our D-E community. All four of the Davies’ children attended D-E: Sam ’99; Abbie ’00; Ben ‘ 02; and Sarah ’04. Their accomplishments are in a word, extraordinary, ranging from earning a Doctorate at MIT in artificial intelligence (Sam) to serving as a School Psychologist in Fairbanks, Alaska (Sarah).”

And so, beginning with a meaningful assembly with Lower School children reading letters, reciting poetry, singing songs, and presenting beautifully original artistic creations to both Peter and Melissa… to an outdoor ceremony on Mr. Rocky’s Field, at which two teak benches were dedicated… to a reception for Peter and Melissa at which their sons Ben and Sam paid a surprise visit… D-E did its very best to show heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the entire Davies family, to whom we wish our very best as they celebrate the next story in their lives.
