“Strengthening Family Connections” with Dr. Steiner-Adair

Question: When does technology make you smarter?

Answer: When you turn it off at least 1 hour before bedtime!

Clinical psychologist and author Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair shared this smart tip and more with Lower and Middle School students during an assembly on Jan. 21, which served as a preview of her evening presentation for D-E parents/guardians, faculty and staff, alumni and friends that was hosted by the D-E Parents’ Association (PA), in partnership with the “Road to Well-Being” Speaker Series. Dr. Steiner-Adair discussed the topic of “The Sustainable Family: Seven Principles for Strengthening Family Connections in the Digital Age.” The evening began with a meeting hosted by the D-E PA, which included a Parent Affinity Group Meet & Greet, as well as announcements about open seats on the PA Executive Committee for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year.

Dr. Steiner-Adair’s presentation was a must-see for today’s “connected” families. In her words: “Technology can be complicated, but deciding that we want the healthiest, most meaningful and sustainable lives for our children and families isn’t complicated at all. It’s going to mean different things at different ages and it’s going to look different as technology continues to shape-shift before our eyes. The parenting paradox of the moment is that as much as technology enables us to connect to our families more than ever, it also can contribute to our losing touch with those we love in some essential ways.”

A critically-acclaimed author, Dr. Steiner-Adair’s most recent book is “The Big Disconnect: Protecting Family and Childhood Relationships in the Digital Age” (click here for additional details). She has consulted for over 350 independent and public schools, parents and students on a wide range of topics related to strengthening children’s social and emotional development, shaping school culture, and deepening parents’ connections to their children. A highly sought after speaker, Dr. Steiner-Adair’s warmth, humor and compassionate understanding of children and the adults who care about them is extremely compelling. She has also appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, NBC Morning Joe, The Huffington Post Live, WSJ Live, The Discovery Channel, CNN and PBS, and been quoted in numerous newspapers and magazines.

Dr. Steiner-Adair spent the day with Grade 5, Middle and Upper School students, as well as the teaching faculty at D-E (pictured below, in Hulst House), to discuss the topics of healthy relationships, technology and the importance of educating for social and emotional intelligence. Her evening presentation will be an excellent opportunity for D-E families to continue the conversation!
