India June ’15 Awarded Bergen County MLK Birthday Observance Youth Certificate of Merit

Each year, [the Office of Multicultural Affairs] is contacted to nominate a senior to receive recognition for their scholarship and community service by the Bergen County MLK Birthday Observance Committee. This year, India June ‘15 was nominated and received the committee’s Youth Certificate of Merit at the 86th Birthday Celebration in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 19, at SMA Fathers (Society of African Missions) in Tenafly, NJ.

A number of students from public and private schools in Bergen County are selected and honored at the ceremony that includes a guest speaker and dignitaries from local and state governments. Each recipient receives the committee’s Certificate of Merit and other recognitions from local and state officials. India was one of 18 awardees this year. Past D-E recipients were Debbie Rivera ‘11, Misha Inniss-Thompson ‘12 and Ghenesis Mendez ‘13. Grades, Community Service and School Involvement are criteria for consideration.

Here is India’s bio that was included in the ceremony’s program:

“India has received several notable awards at school including the Principal’s Award, the Rensselaer Medal, Math/Science/Technology Award, and is a Leggett Scholar. In the summer of 2014, she attended the Naval Academy Summer Seminar at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. She serves as co-editor-in-chief of Spectrum, the school newspaper, and was editor of the School News section. She is co-president of the Gay/Straight Alliance and, as a member of the NJ State Chemistry Olympics team, she wrote research papers on a variety of chemistry topics; presented results of experiments; and took timed tests in chemical nomenclature She is a member of the Nyack Community Ambulance Corps (Youth Corps).
