Matthew Waltman ’16 Wins MLK Service Award

Matthew Waltman ’16 was recognized as the 2016 Youth Certificate of Merit Awardee for Dwight-Englewood School at the 87th Birthday Celebration in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., held this year at Temple Emeth in Teaneck, NJ, in January. Matt has been an active member of the Upper School club CODES (Community Outreach at D-E School) and spent last summer as a peer mentor for the International Rescue Committee’s Refugee Youth Summer Academy in New York City, which assists newly arrived refugee youth and prepares them to succeed in the New York City public schools. In addition, he won the 2015 National John F. Kennedy Profile for Courage Essay Contest as a junior last spring.

Matt was nominated by D-E’s Office of Multicultural Affairs to receive recognition by the Bergen County MLK Birthday Observance Committee for his scholarship and community service. A number of students from public and private schools in Bergen County are selected and honored at the annual ceremony that includes a guest speaker and dignitaries from local and state governments. Each recipient receives the committee’s Certificate of Merit and other recognitions from local and state officials.
