2016 Bulldog Classic raises $130K+!

Presented by The Grace & Mercy Foundation, the 20th annual Bulldog Classic was held at Montammy Golf Club in Alpine, raising an impressive $136,000 total for D-E student financial aid. Guests were served up a full day of tennis, yoga, and golf to support the D-E community, followed by an evening that was both inspiring and enticing.

Tennis singles and doubles morning matches, some of which were quite competitive, kicked-off the day. Due to popular demand, not just one but two yoga sessions were held in the morning and afternoon. The Classic’s  ‘flagship’ event, golf, wrapped up activities in the afternoon and was highlighted by special competitions.  (For a list of winners in the tennis and golfing events, please see below.)

A cocktail reception and dinner wrapped up the day, featuring an ethnic foods ‘stations’-style buffet.  After Head of School Dr. Rodney V. De Jarnett welcomed everyone to this “wonderful 20th anniversary” he then turned the podium over to the first featured alumni speaker, Larry Stevens ’06.  Stevens briefly recalled messages that he shared when he was the event’s keynoter in 2014, reflecting on his ongoing gratitude and admittedly the unique complexities associated with being a recipient of financial aid…  thus having a very different perspective from many of his peers who did not have the “incredible opportunity” to attend D-E .

Stevens then introduced alumna Debbie Rivera Murphy ’11, the Bulldog Classic 2016 keynote speaker.  Rivera moved more than a few guests to tears with her personal reflections about “what a privilege it is to be a graduate of Dwight-Englewood.”  Speaking to her experience as a recipient of the SEEDS financial aid program, through which she was able to attend D-E’s Upper School on a full scholarship, Rivera described her memory of how attending D-E for high school was “like being on a totally different planet, in an amazing way” and spoke to D-E has been instrumental to all that she has accomplished today — including graduating from Georgetown University and now serving as a  Teach for America faculty member at the very same public school in Patterson, NJ where she attended middle school.

After Rivera’s comments, Bulldog Classic Committee Co-Chair Barry Zeller was joined by fellow volunteers  Jen Law and Tim Holt, to lead a Live Auction and announce Raffle winners.  Some of the most coveted Live Auction items included a Nickelodeon “President for a Day” opportunity;  a parking spot on the D-E campus for a Class of 2018 (Junior) student; “House” seats to the Broadway hit Hamilton; a ski chalet weekend outing; and various sporting event tickets and box seats packages.

Winners of the tennis and golfing activities were also recognized as noted here.  Cheers to these winners and all our enthusiastic players and yogis, and sincere appreciation and gratitude to Bulldog Classic attendees for being involved in this outstanding special event for our D-E community.

Finally, special thanks to our presenting sponsor, The Grace & Mercy Foundation, and all our generous sponsors for their exceptional commitment to this worthy cause, including those sponsors who have supported the Classic for no less than 20 consecutive years: Dale & Allan C. Bell ’77; CLG Insurance; and Benzel Busch Mercedes Benz and the Agresta Family.
