Matching Wits at Inaugural Chess Tournament

D-E 3side60° AfterCare & Enrichment (ACE) hosted its first-ever Academic Chess Tournament in early December. This Saturday morning event was open to chess players in grades K–5 from D-E as well as all area public and private schools, and was presented in collaboration with NYChessKids.

Dr. Sherronda Brown, D-E 360° Director, explains, “Chess tournaments give children the opportunity to improve their strategic and critical thinking skills through applied performance. Regardless of experience, the children who participated were given the chance to experience the elements of a traditional chess tournament as well as a pre-tournament workshop, enhancing their learning and overall game satisfaction in a fun and nurturing environment!”

Led by Saudin Robovic, International Chess Master and NYChessKids pedagogue, children were guided through the process of scoring, how to use timers, and the general rules of tournament play. They also registered in advance of the tournament with the US Chess Federation, so that they would receive a rating as part of their participation.

Congratulations to the following D-E Lower School students involved in this year’s ACE Chess Tournament: Aaron ’24; Alex ’24; Alexander ’29; Anna ’26; Austin ’29; Brandon ’25; Caroline ’27; Cooper ’26; Crystal ’27; Daniel ’24; Elijah ’28; Eric ’24; Isaac ’28; Isaiah ’25; Ishan ’29; Kian ’29; Leyla ’28; Lucy ’27; Mayer ’28; Nicholas ’27; and Samuel ’27.
