Foreign Language Teachers Present at Educators Conference

Lower School Spanish teachers Ericka Collado and Sandra Harrison were speakers at the annual conference for Foreign Language Educators of NJ (FLENJ), held earlier this year.  The pair collaborated on two presentations — “All About Colombia! A Cross Curricular Thematic Unit to Celebrate Colombian Culture” and “Robots in the FLES Classroom: A New Twist on the Old Tricks” — both of which drew from their ongoing work with Lower School students in kindergarten through Grade 5.

Ms. Collado described in the conference materials how, in the Colombia-focused unit, “[D-E School] students and teachers engaged in a Colombian adventure. They made flowers and silletes, savored buñuelos and arepas, read a collection of Rafael Pombo’s stories, traveled by chivas, and learned the process of Colombian coffee making. The exploration culminated with an all school assembly and carnaval to celebrate the beauty of Colombian culture.”

For their second session, Ms. Collado noted, “Robotics is changing the way we live and learn. This session discussed the use of robots to promote student engagement, and use of the target language in the three modes of communication. From wind-up toys to drones, participants learned how to make the most of a variety of these technological tools.”

Both teachers also enjoyed reuniting with retired LS teacher Janet Glass during the conference! (See photo on top.  From left are Ericka Collado, Janet Glass, and Sandra Harrison.)
