In this elective course, juniors and seniors develop a deeper understanding of the natural environment, its beauty, and some of the ways in which it supports us. A study of food webs, and nutrient cycles provides a foundational knowledge of how healthy ecosystems work. The class proceeds to explore threats to and changes in our environment, in particular how human activities are causing climate change and affecting our air, water, and soil. Students also develop a nuanced understanding of how their own actions can contribute to solving some of these issues. This understanding is deepened through examination of age-old stories that inform us of how people have experienced and affected the environment over history. This class relies on labs to provide experiential learning and fosters constructive discussions about the environment.
