D-E music students recently had the unique privilege of a visit and related master class from Chelsea Knox, principal flutist of the Metropolitan Opera! Rebecca Steinberg, D-E Music Dept. Faculty, who arranged this thanks to a longtime personal connection with Ms. Knox, shared the following: “Students learned about what it’s like working as a professional flutist in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra – including what it’s like to support singers, how to play in a section, [and] how to work with a conductor.”
During the master class students also learned specific fundamental exercises, extended flute techniques, and practice techniques for the music they are working on. They also heard an “inspiring” performance of two contrasting and engaging works for solo flute.
A sought-after performer, Ms. Knox has held positions as assistant principal flute of the Baltimore Symphony and principal Flute of the New Haven and Princeton Symphonies. She has been hailed by the New York Times for her warmth, precision, and clarity, as well as by the New York Classical Review for her “expressive life and full tone.”
