In celebration of Black History Month, the Black Affinity student organization presented an Upper School assembly highlighting Black people in music and entertainment. In his opening remarks, Black Affinity leader Pape Toure ’25 shared that this assembly “centers on [Black] representation with many words and visuals.” This included a brief history of the commemorative month; a name-that-song game featuring Black artists of the past and present (congrats, 10th graders!); an analysis by Pape on the impact of Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show; a dance performance by Dani Dennis ’28, Jian Harrell ’26, Adesola Afonja ’27, and Madigan Kacmar ’26; and a rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” described as The Black National Anthem, by Jian, Ayo Sowore ’25, and Kenneth Seymour ’26. Black Affinity leader Wynn Wesley says the assembly was a way to showcase the wonderful talent at D-E and “represents how Black History Month is something that you’re always learning about.” CHEERS to our Black Affinity students for an inspiring and enlightening program!
