Upper School, Lower School Students Team Up to Write a ‘Small Story’

Oct 7, 2025 | Our Community of Learners, Recent News, Seeking Excellence

In a beautiful display of cross-divisional partnership, the Creative Writing class of Ms. Stephanie “Tuc” Tucker, Dean of the Class of 2027, is working together with the PreK 4 Class of 2039 on a book lesson. “This semester-long project will culminate with the completion of ‘small stories,’ created in collaboration between ‘big’ and ‘small’ writers, showing that writing and telling stories is for everyone,” explains Dean Tuc. To kick off the effort, the Upper School students brought in their favorite children’s book and read to their group of two to three students, while the younger students shared books they recently created as part of their introduction to the different parts of a book. “Eventually, we are working on creating our own children’s books with illustrations and captivating words, with the help of our PreK 4 student groups,” says Creative Writing student Lily Berger ’26. The writing groups will meet several times to work on brainstorming ideas for character(s), setting, and subject; drafting an author’s page; and finalizing their books. “This is a memorable experience and a creative way to investigate the world of creative writing,” says Lily, a senior and D-E Lifer who fondly recalls her own time in the PreK 4 classroom. She says she looks forward to sharing their final book with the LS school community “as one of my lasting impacts here.”
