Eastern European Culture Club US Assembly Highlights

Feb 20, 2025 | Diversity Initiatives, Recent News, School Life Highlights

A recent Upper School (US) Assembly, presented by the Eastern European Culture Club, a newly formed D-E student organization, centered on understanding Eastern Europe. The timing of the assembly was chosen deliberately, says club co-founder/leader Len Glozman ’25, to coincide with numerous Eastern European holidays, such as Maslenitsa (celebrated in Russia) and Baba Marta (a Bulgarian tradition). “In addition, we felt the need to commemorate the three-year anniversary of the War in Ukraine by putting this war… back in people’s minds in a relatable way,” says Len. Club member Masha Glozman ’28, who presented on Maslenitsa, says, “I am aware it is not a widely known holiday, but it is something that is close to my heart because of the times I’ve celebrated it with my family.”

Of the club, Len says it “provides me with the opportunity to reconnect with my culture [Russian] and to share it with others, whether that be people with similar connections to this part of the world, or simply people who are curious.” Amanda Lehman ’26, club vice president, says: “My Nana immigrated from Ukraine to the U.S. with my mother and uncle when she was 40… Sharing these stories and listening to others is meaningful and instills the idea that I should pass this culture on to friends and younger generations.”
