This week the Upper School (US) INSPIRE student organization, focused on identity and culture, hosted a Multicultural Showcase. INSPIRE leaders Asher Cohen ’25, Musashi Shabazz ’25, Maya Jarrett ’25, and Cameron Gennardo ’26 gave opening remarks introducing the eight performances to follow. “The differences in our stories is what sets us apart,” said Musashi.
In honor of her Nigerian heritage, Ayo Sowore ’25 sang “Ire,” by Adekunle Gold, a song about joy. US Spanish Teacher Dr. Ericka Collado, who is the Women of Color Affinity group advisor, described her “love of telling stories and poetry” and shared an ode to Afro-Caribbean islands called “Black Majesty,” while playing a bomba drum. Wynn Wesley ’26 read aloud a piece titled, “I Believe in Thinking,” in which she reflected, “When you choose to be thoughtful, you inspire others to do the same.” History Teacher Jennifer Seligman represented her Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry by playing the traditional styles of “doina” and “freylach” on a klezmer violin. Asha Harker ’27 gave a monologue on “being a mixed kid.” Isabella Morales ’26 sang Celia Cruz’s “Quizas, Quizas, Quizas.” Ms. Petra van’t Slot told a children’s story by a prolific Dutch writer. And in closing, Latin American Student Affinity leaders led a surprise Latin dance fiesta featuring faculty, staff, and students. We love celebrating our diverse D-E community!
