MS/US Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) Assemblies

Apr 24, 2025 | Recent News, School Life Highlights

In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah), Steven Markowicz, the grandson of two Holocaust survivors, was a guest speaker during Middle School and Upper School assemblies this morning. Mr. Markowicz represents 3GNY, a nonprofit founded by grandchildren of Holocaust survivors that aims to preserve the legacies and lessons of the segregation and brutal massacre of 6 million Jews in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. Mr. Markowicz shared the inspiring story of his grandfather, Philip Markowicz, who wrote the autobiography “My Three Lives,” describing his early life in Poland; the deaths of his family members at the hands of the Nazis and the harrowing experience he and his brother endured in Auschwitz and other concentration camps; and his eventual immigration to Toledo, Ohio, to raise his own family. “I’m so lucky to have had them as grandparents,” said Mr. Markowicz, adding that he hopes audiences take away that the Holocaust “shows what happens when hate and intolerance go unchecked.” For those who wanted to continue the discussion, the US Jewish Affinity @ D-E (JADE) student organization hosted an informal lunch with Mr. Markowicz. D-E sincerely thanks our guest speaker and JADE for this powerful, thought-provoking presentation.
