DEIB Assemblies Raise Awareness & Celebrate Differences

Dec 21, 2023 | Inclusive Excellence

Assembly programs held in all three divisions help to promote understanding as our differences are both highlighted and celebrated.

Within the first week of the new 2023-2024 school year, the Lower School gathered for a special opening assembly. Ms. Simone Henry Ablognon, Assistant Director of DEIB, introduced to our youngest students what “DEIB” stands for (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging), and how important it is to the culture of the School. Following a group ‘exercise’ in brainstorming and sharing, the assembly fittingly concluded with a song and the story, “Our School is Our Family.”

In recognition of Latin American Heritage Month, which is celebrated from mid-September through mid-October, our Upper School’s Latin American Student Affinity Group (LASA) hosted a cultural assembly. The morning started off with a bit of trivia followed by a presentation of the diverse traditions, music styles, dialects that make up Latin American and Caribbean culture. The assembly ended with a special guest performance from professional salsa dancers.

In the Middle School, students celebrated the UN’s International Day of Peace. To honor this day, the Middle School held an assembly during which original poetry readings were shared on themes of peace and understanding. Then, immediately following the assembly, every Middle School student created a pinwheel as part of Pinwheels for Peace, a global collaborative art project.  This temporary display around campus helped to convey the UN’s 2024 theme of  “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals.”  The Global Goals are 17 goals set forth by the UN in 2016 to achieve by 2030 in order to achieve a sustainable future for all. This year marks the half-way point to the goals. 2023 is also the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide.
