APUSH (AP US History) Students Progressive Era Highlights

What do Progressive Era Reformers and Speed Dating have in common? In D-E’s AP U.S. History (APUSH) classes, students used this format to learn about historical figures from the Progressive Movement in the late 19th century to the early 20th century and how their political, social, or economic interests aligned with one another. Students role-played as a diverse selection of reformers such as Ida B. Wells, Nellie Bly, Teddy Roosevelt, and Booker T. Washington, who successfully influenced substantive legislation in the areas of women’s suffrage, civil rights, financial reform, education, and more. US History Faculty Member Dr. Arika Easley-Houser says this activity was a “way for students to get through their reading assignments in an interactive, fun way.” Students spent a few minutes with other “reformers,” describing themselves and exchanging views on various issues. Chloe Yoon ’26, who portrayed Jane Addams, says she enjoyed the exercise because “it’s a new way of learning the historical figures.” We love the creativity!
