Last week, the Upper Schoolâs 3D-Engineering (3D-E) Club and the Imperatore Library co-hosted the annual Science Buddies Engineering Challenge at D-E in recognition of National Engineers Week. US/MS students participated in the project, which consisted of building a landing pad for a paper rocket, meant to emulate the design of a ârocket catcherâ in the real world. Jackson Chang â25, a 3D-E student leader, said this project âgives peopleâin a kid-friendly wayâthe opportunity to dabble in engineering design.â
Innovation Coordinator Colleen Larionoff, who facilitated the challenge for the MS students, remarked that these activities are a great example of âinnovation in actionâ because they arenât tied to a class, and this gives students more freedom to explore and make mistakes. Seventh grader Ken Escobar â30, said he participated in the challenge because âI feel like itâs an opportunity for collaboration⌠and now that Iâm immersed in it, it seems fun.â
US Robotics Teams Finish Strong @ Ramsey Meet!
Our Upper School Robotics Teams competed at their final regular season meet last weekend in Ramsey, NJ and by all accounts D-Emonstrated a great finish! Our Varsity team, Critical Mass (Team 207), held a record of 4-1. Our JV team, Absolute Zero (Team 13048),...
LS Robotics Teams Deep See, Ocean Animals Achieve Inaugural Success!
This weekend, the D-E360° FIRST LEGO League Explore robotics teams showcased their work at the Teki Explore Festival along with 30 teams from across the state. The season's theme was "Submerged," and students were challenged to identify a real-world problem related...
D-E Students Explore Machine Learning at the Student AI Summit
On Saturday, Jan. 11, members of the newly formed D-E Student Committee on AI attended the Student Artificial Intelligence Summit at Newark Academy along with other schools to learn more about the applications of AI in a variety of fields. The trip was organized by Ms. Diana Gross, Chief Innovation Officer, and Mr. Bill Campbell, Associate Director of Technology for Academics. Five of our studentsâSoham Bafana â25, Hudson Guzman â27, Jason Lee â27, Derin Sezgin â28, and Sylvie Yao â27âalso volunteered to lead a session. Of the experience, Sylvie says, âI was aware of the extent to which AI was expanding but going to the AI Summit showed me how much AI has grownâŚ[It] is constantly changing and inevitably will play a big role in the future.â
US Robotics Prep for Upcoming MeetÂ
We caught up with Mr. Fleischl, coach of D-Eâs Upper School Robotics Teams, at the STEM Center to talk shop as our Robotics teams, Critical Mass (Team 207) and Absolute Zero (Team 13048), prepare for their next meet in the FIRST Tech Challenge on Sunday, Jan. 19....
US Robotics Teams Are Positioned for State Competition
D-Eâs Upper School Robotics Teams are halfway through the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics season! âOur varsity team, Critical Mass, and our JV team, Absolute Zero, have completed their first design prototypes and are beginning work on their new, improved robot designs for the second half of the season,â says Coach Chris Fleischl. Teams participate in meets in preparation for the Bergen County League Tournament in February. During a meet on Dec. 15, at River Dell High School, both our varsity and JV teams finished with 3 wins and 2 losses. Next up is a meet on Sunday, Jan. 19, at Blair Academy. The goal is to qualify for the State Championship and, ultimately, the World Championship. Critical Massâ Jackson Chang â25, says, âI fell in love with robotics because of opportunities to express myself through building components⌠We work hard every day to continue to iterate on our robot to even slightly improve our chances in competitions.â Weâre rooting for all our future engineers and data scientists!
MS Robotics Team Nitro
Earlier this month, D-Eâs Middle School (MS) Robotics Team Nitro competed at the State Tournament in Mount Olive. In addition to showcasing their robot, the team presented their prototype of an oyster-shell-based building product. The product is designed to combat the...
Student Leaders Encourage Digital Wellness at D-E
Digital Wellness has been top of mind at D-E, just as it has on a broader scale in recent years with the release of data highlighting the harm that social media and excessive screen time can have on kids. To this end, the D-E Parent Ed. Committee hosted a Digital...
